What is Touch Typing?

Introduction to Touch Typing

The process of typing without looking at the keyboard is known as Touch Typing. It involves typing by eight fingers and a thumb. In order to touch type properly, the fingers are required to be placed on the keys assigned to them.

Advantages of Touch Typing

There are  number of advantages of touch typing for anyone who aims to learn touch typing. The list below describes a few basic benefits of acquiring this skill.

Speed is considered the most essential and big advantage of learning to touch type. The normal speed of a touch typist is above 75-80 words per minute, while a hunt and peck typist would hardly reach 25 or 30 words per minute. Finding the next key for each stroke will definitely decrease your typing speed.

Accuracy is equally an important aspect and benefit of touch typing, if a typist can type more than 100 words per minute but there is no accuracy in his typing, then such kind of typing skill is useless. No one will bother to try such typing services.

Saving Time

Touch typing helps save time, it improves your typing speed e.g. from 30 to 60 words per minute. Essentially, it will take you halftime to do the same amount of work.

The following TABLES describes how a touch typist performs better than a two-finger typist.

It is a matter of fact that typing is an exhausting activity if it is done for a long period of time. It makes a typist feel tired both mentally and physically. Touch typing  reduces fatigue and help you focus on two things at the same time. Another advantage in this regard is that touch typing relieves from bending your head over the keyboard in order to find your next keystrokes.

People who work on the keyboard or computer full day are likely to be a victim of various health issues such as repetitive stress injuries, or RSI. But don’t worry, touch typing is here to help you. With touch typing you are not bent at keyboards and utilizing all of your fingers truly reduces risks of RSI and other health issues.

Job Prospects

Typing is no more an optional skill. Many employers require computer skills and a certain typing speed to even consider someone for a position. Remember, hunt and peck typists are no longer preferred even if they can type 20-35 words in a minute. Learning to touch type can be one of the most valuable skill of your career. It can help you in getting an entry job and then excel on it to the next level.
